When a person thinks of property damage in Florida, hurricanes, windy days and torrential rains are the first things that come to mind. It’s not every day that your home is wrecked when a small plane crashes into it.
Such was the case the other day when a small plane, a Beech BE-76, crashed into a Pompano home located at 925 NE 26 Avenue, destroying the home and critically injuring at least 3 people. The pilot of the plane was practicing takeoffs and landings at nearby Pompano Beach Airpark at 3 p.m. Another home next to the crash site also suffered damages from the fire that broke out as a result of the crash.
All three passengers on board of the airplane were seriously injured in the crash with third-degree burns. One was flown via trauma hawk to Broward Health center. There was no one at home in the house where the plane crashed.
The website www.homeinsurance.org states that certain homeowners insurance policies may have specific language as it pertains to property damage due to aircraft crashes. Most homeowners have “all-risk” comprehensive coverage which covers you for any and all types of disasters. You should read your homeowners policy to see if it is “all-risk”, or if certain perils are excluded. You might find out that you need to add additional riders to your plan to make sure you’re not left with large home repair bills if an unexpected accident happens.
