Coral reefs, icebergs and Somali pirates have ruined several vacations. Here are just a few of the worst cruise-ship disasters we’ve seen:
1. Carnival Triumph
A four-day excursion to the Caribbean became eight nightmarish days in Perdition when an engine fire left the ship afloat in the Gulf of Mexico without air conditioning, working power or a working septic system.
2. Carnival Splendor
Similar to Carnival Triumph’s tragic travel, in November 2011 Carnival Splendor was also stranded by an engine fire in the Pacific Ocean. It took three days for its 4,500 passengers to be hauled back to the San Diego Bay.
3. Costa Concordia
A reef caused the Costa Concordia to run aground off the coast of Tuscany, Italy. It tipped on its side, resulting in 32 lost lives and 64 injuries.
